Sizzling Summer Shorts Eligibility

The Student Filmmakers Magazine Sizzling Summer Shorts Contest (hereafter referred to as the "Summer Shorts Contest") is open to students and professionals through university and above. Employees, previous employees, and family members of Student Filmmakers Magazine are not eligible to participate.

No purchase is necessary to enter the Summer Shorts Contest. However, all entrants must post a link to the Summer Shorts Contest on their social media or website. Here are some suggested posts:

"I just entered the Sizzling Summer Shorts Contest! Check it out at www.summershortscontest.com."

"Excited to participate in the Sizzling Summer Shorts Contest by Student Filmmakers Magazine. Learn more at www.studentfilmmakers.com."

Each entrant can submit up to three (3) videos.

All entrants under 18 or with a legal disability must have the registration form signed online by a legal guardian who accepts responsibility on their behalf and agrees to bind the entrant to the Rules.

Details of Official Rules

Participation in the Summer Shorts Contest constitutes entrants' full and unconditional agreement to and acceptance of the Rules and the decisions of Student Filmmakers Magazine, which are final and binding. Student Filmmakers Magazine reserves the right to disqualify any entrant who fails to comply with all official Rules.

Eligibility

Summer Shorts Contest entries may be submitted by an individual or by a group of any size. In the case of group submissions, the appropriate entry level is the age/grade of the oldest group member, and one Prize will be awarded to the entire group.

Language

Videos should be submitted in English or with English subtitles for all text and audible words. All correspondence with Student Filmmakers Magazine, including entry forms and support materials, must be in English.

Film Length

Entrants may submit a video between 30 seconds and 5 minutes. Student Filmmakers Magazine will accept and consider short animated films, with the minimum length for animated submissions being 45 seconds.

Prizes

Entrants who do not conform to policies and Rules may be disqualified at the discretion of Student Filmmakers Magazine. Any disqualifications are the decision of Student Filmmakers Magazine and are final.

Entrants' License to Student Filmmakers Magazine

Entrants retain all intellectual property rights in their submissions, including copyright rights. As a condition of participation in the Summer Shorts Contest, entrants grant Student Filmmakers Magazine a non-exclusive, perpetual right to show, display, distribute, and market all film entries, in their entirety, in part (film clips), and still shots, to live audiences, online (recorded and live stream), and in written materials. This permission includes but is not limited to Student Filmmakers Magazine's right to use all film submissions in screenings, showcases, workshops, educational activities, and marketing efforts with third-party partners. Exceptions and requests to opt out will be granted only by written request and must be made before acceptance into the Summer Shorts Contest.

Summer Shorts Contest Submission Period

The Summer Shorts Contest Submission Period is from the start of summer until two weeks after the last day of summer.

Intellectual Property

By entering this Summer Shorts Contest, entrants agree that their submission is their own original work, and does not infringe upon the intellectual property rights of others, and is in compliance with all copyright laws.

When using sources and works that are not your own, entrants agree that those works are part of the public domain, that they have obtained permission to use the work, or that the use of the work does not constitute a substantial portion of the film so as to comply with fair use laws of USC Title 17 Section 107 found at http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl102.html. Where an entrant has obtained permission to use a substantial portion of another's intellectual property, entrant agrees to submit proof of permission.

Entrants agree to not hold Student Filmmakers Magazine liable for any intellectual property disputes and to comply with these Rules and all copyright laws.

Winner Selection/Notification

Winners will be announced in October two weeks after the end of summer.

After winners are chosen, Student Filmmakers Magazine will notify the winners via e-mail or telephone during the week of November 6, 2023. Suppose the winner cannot be contacted within five (5) days after the date of the first attempt to contact. In that case, the Student Filmmakers Magazine may choose to award the next runner-up in Place of the originally selected winner.

Potential winners will be notified by e-mail and/or telephone. If the potential winner cannot be reached or if the Prize is undeliverable, the potential winner forfeits the Prize.

For winning entrants who are minors, Student Filmmakers Magazine reserves the right to award the Prize in the name of the parent/legal guardian.

If a potential winner is disqualified for any reason, Student Filmmakers Magazine may award the applicable Prize to the next runner-up in the category.

General Conditions

In the event that the operation or administration of the Summer Shorts Contest is impaired for any reason such as, but not limited to, fraud, legality, technicality, or in the event that the Summer Shorts Contest is unable to run as planned for any reason, Student Filmmakers Magazine may suspend the Summer Shorts Contest temporarily or indefinitely. Student Filmmakers Magazine may address the issue and resume the Summer Shorts Contest or terminate the Summer Shorts Contest. Suspension or termination of the Summer Shorts Contest is under the sole discretion of Student Filmmakers Magazine, and entrants agree not to hold Student Filmmakers Magazine liable in these circumstances. Student Filmmakers Magazine reserves the right to disqualify any entrant that it finds to not be in compliance or in violation of the Summer Shorts Contest Rules or any entrant who acts in an unprofessional or disruptive manner.

Student Filmmakers Magazine is not liable for any unauthorized or inappropriate sharing of films. Note that violence, profanity, or direct attacks on individuals or organizations will not be accepted. Film submissions must not violate any U.S. laws or laws applicable to International Entrants, including laws relating to religion, moral rights, rights of publicity, and/or privacy. All films must adhere to copyright laws. Any film utilizing copyrighted material that is not the creation or property of the entrant will not be considered unless clear evidence of the legal right to use that copyrighted material is provided with the submission by the applicable deadline (ex: permission by the intellectual property owner).

Release and Limitations of Liability

In consideration for permission to participate in the Summer Shorts Contest, entrants (together with parent or guardian if entrant is under 18 years of age or under a legal disability) expressly release and hold harmless the Student Filmmakers Magazine from and against any and all claims, demands, and causes of action arising out of the entrant's participation in the Summer Shorts Contest. Entrant's release and agreement to hold Student Filmmakers Magazine harmless include but are not limited to intellectual property disputes, cancellation of the Summer Shorts Contest, injury, death, harm, or losses of any kind, whether or not caused in whole or in part by the negligence or other fault of the Student Filmmakers Magazine or its agents. Entrant (together with parent/guardian if appropriate) waives any right to claim any damages whatsoever, including but not limited to consequential, punitive, direct, or indirect damages, and releases and forever discharges Student Filmmakers Magazine, its representatives, employees, officers, agents, and affiliates from all such claims, on behalf of entrants, their heirs, assigns, and any other person claiming by, under, or through entrant.

Disputes

Except when prohibited by law, entrants agree that any and all disputes will be handled individually. In the case of any dispute, entrants agree to attempt resolution with Student Filmmakers Magazine. All issues and questions concerning the construction, validity, interpretation, and enforceability of the Rules, entrants' rights, and obligations, or the rights and obligations of the Student Filmmakers Magazine in connection to the Summer Shorts Contest shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of New York without giving effect to any choice of law or conflict of law rules, which would cause the laws of any jurisdiction other than New York. Any legal fees incurred by Student Filmmakers Magazine in the event of a dispute relating in any way to the Summer Shorts Contest are the responsibility of the entrant.

International Submissions

Prize money awarded to winning International Entrants will be relayed via the International Entrant's affiliated institution. International Entrants must provide information to enable the affiliated institution's receipt of any prize money within a reasonable period of time upon Student Filmmakers Magazine's request. If Student Filmmakers Magazine does not receive adequate information to enable secure payment of prize money, the prize money will not be relayed. All prize money will be paid in U.S. dollars, and all bank and international transfer fees will be deducted from the original prize money amount.
